Twigs (play) 1984 - 138 min. - Feature, Color Keywords daughter, mother, family Produced by RKO Home
Cloris Leachman plays three adult sisters (Emily, Celia, and Dorothy) and their elderly mother each separately, each in her own kitchen on the same day, Thanksgiving eve. Emily, a recent widow talks with the owner of the moving company who has just moved her into her new apartment. Celia, who is mentally ill, and her husband Phil welcome their friend Swede in tragic comedy. On a much happier note, Dorothy and her husband Lou dramatically discuss their marriage, it is their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. The final scene is between mother and dad, the branch from which the twigs have grown. Dialogue from this play was used by Dennis R. Smith and L. Keith Williamson (1985) in their Interpersonal Communication: Roles, Rules, Strategies, and Games, 3rd edition (pp. 302-306) illustrate the central ideas of their text. I like to play segments from each of the first three act to illustrate how communication behavior can create particular climates: (recovery, Emilys scene; illness, Celias scene; health, Dorothys scene). The problem with Twigs is that it is difficult to find a videotape of the play. Bill Edwards (Columbus State U) Credits provided by America Movie Guide http://allmovie.com/ |
