The winner of Grand Prix du Americas, the Ecumenical Jury Prize and voted the audience favorite of the Montreal World Film Festival 1997, this delightful Iranian children's drama follows a pair of nearly impoverished children on their quest to find a missing pair of school shoes. With their sickly mother working full time and their unemployed father's constant job search, the kids are often on their own. Their troubles begin when their mother charges 8-year-old Ali with taking his little sister Zahra to the shoe-repair shop to pick up Zahra's newly repaired pink shoes. Unfortunately, something goes amiss and the shoes are lost. At first the children panic, thinking their parents, who cannot afford more shoes, will be very angry; the two hatch an elaborate scheme whereby they will trade Ali's pair of shoes back and forth between their classes and hope nobody notices until they can find Zahra's rightful shoes. The third feature of Iranian director Majid Majidi (Boycott and Father), features two non-professional actors in the roles of the children. -- Sandra Brennan
