The Van (film) Rated R, 1996 Starring Colm Meaney, Donal O'Kelly Producers: Lynda Myles Fox Video The film is raucous, well-observed, fun, and occasionally tender--particularly when the two characters are interacting with their families, always the most interesting feature of these Doyle-based movies.... The third act, particularly, which is not about much more than the noisy dissolution of a dream, belabors the obvious and does not reveal much of anything waiting to be said about the leaky shelter of a mid-life friendship. Still, there's plenty to recommend the film, particularly Meaney's robust and sometimes sensitive performance, Kelly's fascinating read of a husband, father, and working man who is much stronger than he truly knows, and Frears' good-natured and colorful portrait of a community and its pub-centered rituals. -Tom Keogh (99 Lives: The Video Magazine) |
