A nonacademic book which might be useful as supplementary material
Bramson, Robert M. (1981). Coping with difficult people.
Garden City, NJ, Anchor Press/Doubleday. (226 pages, includes an index). Note: There is a
1988 paperback edition of this book available from Dell. The hardback edition appears to
be out-of-print.
- Bramson received a Ph. D. from U. C. L. A. in Organizational Behavior and the
Psychology of Small Groups. The book contains a 25 item reference list. In the preface the
author acknowledges the influence George Kelly.
- In the introduction, Bramson explains that this book is the product of a four year
study where "we asked several hundred men and women to talk about the most Difficult
People in their lives. We found that the same kinds of behavior patterns were identified
over and over again, some considerably more than others" (p. 4). The behavior
patterns that seem to be the most disruptive or frustrating are: hostile-aggressives,
complainers, silent and unresponsives, super-agreeables, negativists, know-it-all experts,
and indecisives.
